In Memory of Peter Richards

Peter was born August 13, 1948 in Clinton, MA, the son of Warren and Constance (Patterson) Richards. He leaves his wife Mary L. (Kelly) of 40 years, daughter Jillian Lyons and husband Ricky of Fitchburg, two sons Jonathan Richards and wife Nicole of Florida and Jared Richards of Leominster, 2 grandchildren Ty and Ivy Lyons and his sister Jayne Richards of Bolton.

Peter graduated from Nashoba Regional High School in 1966. He went on to Central Connecticut State College graduating with a dual degree in Elementary Education and Physical Education in 1970. He obtained his Master’s Degree from Fitchburg State College.

For the majority of his career, Peter was the Athletic Director and Head Baseball Coach at Nashoba Regional High School. Throughout his time at Nashoba he also held many other positions such as assistant football coach, ice hockey coach, Dean of Students and acting Principal. Peter also spent much of his time as a high school ice hockey referee, umping men’s softball and coaching his boys for many years with the Leominster American Little League, Twin City Hockey League, Leominster Babe Ruth and Leominster DEK Hockey. He was inducted into the Massachusetts’s State Baseball Hall of Fame in 1980, received the MA Athletic Director of the Year and Eastern Seaboard Athletic Director of the year in 2007. Peter was a New England sports fan – through and through. He knew every statistic on every athlete and loved himself a true underdog story.

In his younger years, Peter spent many weekends playing in slow-pitch softball tournaments throughout the Northeast and was “feared” when he stepped up to the plate earning the nicknames of “Boomer” and “Tree Trunk”.’

After retirement, he took much pride in co-developing The Nashoba Regional High School Athletic Hall of Fame which he was named to the first induction class in 2009. His greatest joy was taking care of his grandchildren, often referring to himself as the owner of “Papa’s Daycare”. There is nothing more in life that he loved besides his wife, children and grandchildren.

On Friday, March 18th, four Marines were killed during a training exercise in Norway. One of those Marines, was Captain Ross Reynolds, A 27-year-old Leominster Massachusetts native.

Capt. Ross Reynolds, of Leominster, was onboard an Osprey aircraft that crashed during a NATO exercise, the Marine Corps said.

“Massachusetts mourns the loss of [Marine Corps Capt.] Ross Reynolds of Leominster, who tragically lost his life last week during a training exercise in Norway,” Gov. Charlie Baker said Sunday. “The Marines who tragically passed in the accident are all heroes. We honor his service to our nation and pray for his family.”

Reynolds was approaching five years of service in the Marines, during which he earned the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon. He piloted Ospreys and was based at Marine Corps Air Station New River in North Carolina.

In a statement, the Reynolds family said they were “broken-hearted” and left trying to imagine life without their son.

“We are in shock and are devastated by his loss. We will miss his smile, his hugs, his laughter. We will miss his energy and goodness. Ross was so caring, compassionate and committed, not only to his country, but also to being the best son, brother, husband, son-in-law, nephew, cousin, uncle, brother-in-law, friend and Marine that he could be. We appreciate all those who have reached out to support us at this difficult time. We pray for Ross and the other Marines lost in this tragic accident,” the family said.

Just before midnight on Thursday, March 3rd Massachusetts State Police Trooper Tamar Bucci tragically passed after a fatal accident when her cruiser was struck by a tanker truck. Trooper Bucci was attempting to pull to the side of the road to assist a disabled motorist at the time of the accident.

Massachusetts State Police Department Col. Christopher Mason said. “Late last night, on a stretch of road she protected every night on the midnight shift, Trooper Bucci gave her life in the act of trying to help another person in distress. There is no greater act of sacrifice than to give one’s life for another,”

The force of the impact pushed the cruiser, which had its blue lights activated, off the roadway.

“The department is devastated by our loss. We are eternally grateful for the attempts of everyone involved to assist Trooper Bucci and (try) to save her life,” Mason said.

The Greg Hill Foundation will be hosting a fundraiser for the Bucci Family and matching all donations up to $10,000. Please consider making a donation in honor of State Police Trooper Tamar Bucci.
