While driving to the airport early on Saturday, April 19th, David Tammaro, his fiancée Janine Kaplinger, and her son Dylan (20) were involved in a very serious car accident. They were hit by a car going over 100mph on the highway that caused them to roll over 3 times and be trapped within the vehicle until first responders were able to safely retrieve them with the jaws of life.
David suffered from a significant spinal cord injury and had emergent surgery to stabilize his completely dislocated spine and retrieve bone fragments from his spinal canal causing loss of function from his hips down. He was taken into an emergent 6 hour spinal surgery in attempt to repair some of the damage to his spinal cord. Janine suffered a fracture in her spine requiring surgery as well as a broken foot that will need surgery, broken ribs, a broken nose and a fractured sacrum. Dylan has a fractured neck and a small brain bleed.
David is the definition of a true hard worker as a self-employed wallpaper hanger and painter. He worries he let his customers down instead of worrying about the fact that he may never get to walk again and play with his 2 year old grandson Noah like he used to. Even if he regains some mobility, he will no longer be able to continue this line of work.
Dylan has been released from the hospital while David and Janine are expected to stay in the hospital for multiple weeks to be under closer supervision. All three will have a long road to recovery with intense rehabilitation of PT and OT to be able to adapt to their new life and will need to make renovations to their home once released.
